Just because France didn’t show up for the World Cup doesn’t mean you shouldn’t show up this weekend at Managua’s Alianza Francesa. Friday night they kick off their Fiesta de la Musica with the Festival Electro, featuring performances by Revuelta Sonora, Sala Bipolar and a special guest DJ from France, Hannah Hais. The music begins at 9pm, with an entrance of 100 córdobas.
Saturday, the festival continues at 3pm, when you have the opportunity to catch 19 of Nicaragua’s up-and-coming bands for free, before they make it big. One of the featured groups we definitely recommend you check out is Espiral.
The idea for Espiral began in late 2008, when musician and guitar player Francisco Cedeño began creating songs with a vocalist. However he soon realized he needed a band because “two guys is kind of boring.” Drummer Gabriel Sevilla and bass player Luis Munguía were added to the mix, and that’s when things really started to spiral into control.
From there, the group spent 10 months or so pre-producing songs before even beginning to rehearse. Due to scheduling difficulties, it soon became apparent that the singer they had was not going to work out. Vocalist Christiana Pedronni and rapper Cheyo Brown joined the project, putting their own experiences and lyrics into the music that had already been started without them.
“The concepts were already there [we] just had to develop them, says Brown. “The joy for me was coming into the group and these guys giving me this set of songs but saying I want you to talk about [the same ideas] but I want it to be your words.”
The result has been a fusion of Latin rock and hip hop unique on the Nicaraguan music scene. The chemistry and contrast between the vocalists is enhanced by the live instrumentation, especially the guitar work from Cedeño, whose solos often hold the songs together.
Rock for me is boring right now, Cedeño says. “I wanted to play something different, something new,” and with Espiral he and the band feel they have found that something. Come get a sneak preview Saturday evening at Alianza Frances and make sure to be at Caramanchel on July 3rd as Espiral plays their first official concert along with La Cegua and Fusion.
