Episode 2: Eating With Dinosaurs: El Rincón Salvadoreño

El Rincón Salvadoreño is the only restaurant that I know of in Managua where you can eat lunch with dinosaurs. I’m not sure why they only hangout there but if I had to guess it’s because of their addiction to the riquisimo Pan con Pavo (literally ‘bread with turkey,’ but trust me, it’s so much more).

A traditional Salvadoran open-faced sandwich, Pan con Pavo is made with turkey and veggies smothered in a delicious roasted spice sauce and served warm. While I couldn’t tell you how traditionally made the one I tried at Rincón Salvadoreño was, I can tell you is it was fantastic, hearty and full of flavor.

Most Salvadoran restaurants are known for their inexpensive, yet delicious, pupusas (C$13 a piece), and while that would seem to be a perfectly good lunch for a gringo as pinche as me, once I saw the photo on the menu of their take on Pan con Pavo (C$46) I knew we were destined to be together, even if it meant I couldn’t afford to wash it down with a cold Pilsener (C$27, imported from El Salvador).

(Sidenote: This pinche gringo really appreciates those restaurants that put actual pictures of their food on the menu, as opposed to other places that under ‘hamberguesa’ have a picture of a Big Mac they stole off of Google or under ‘pollo’ have a cartoon drawing of a chicken leg from the Flintstones. But I digress…)

The atmosphere inside Rincón Salvadoreño is decidedly laidback, especially if you forgo the bench seating and relax in the rocking chairs. Before you leave, make sure to walk across the way and say hi to the dinos. No need to be nervous, while they may look a little vicious, they are actually some tranquilo dudes.

I give Rincón Salvadoreño 4 out of 5 puños. The sandwich was excellent, but at C$ 46 getting stuck drinking tap water kind of sucked. – GP

   Hi pinche gringo! i really like your reviews, they seem honest and they make me laugh. Especially the part where u admit you are pinche or the part you suggest people should say hello to the dinos! jajaja te pasas!
