“I think that as a designer you need to have some inspiration from your culture.”

For the third time in the last two years, Chico Brenes is back in Nicaragua with a fresh group of fellow skaters. For the Nicaraguan native who has been a professional skateboarder for 16 years, the trips give him a chance to show his friends where he is from, check out some skate spots and perhaps most importantly to expose kids here to another level of skateboarding.
Along for the ride this time out, are Danny Fuenzalida and Vincent Alvarez (youtube them for some dope videos).

This past Tuesday the group took a trip to Granada to film a few clips for an LRG video to be released next year that has already shot footage in China and Australia, as well as all over the US. In Granada, the whole neighborhood came out to enjoy the ’show.’
Peep a couple exclusive clips below:
Several months ago Chico and his family opened the first true skate shop in the country, Central Skate. It had been a dream of Chico’s ever since ’92 when he came back to Nicaragua for the first time since leaving at the age of 10.
The store carries decks, accessories, and all the latest gear. For Chico it’s all about having supports in place to help the skate culture grow. The tours and the shop were the first steps but he has bigger plans on the horizon.
“The scene is growing, I see the potential,” he says. “The next thing we need is a skatepark. I wanna try to team up with the city, see if we can get some land and try to get some help from my sponsors. Open up a skatepark for the kids so they can just go and they don’t have to skate in the streets and don’t have to worry about getting hit by a car, don’t have to worry about getting robbed.”
The whole crew will be part of Festival Underground this Saturday at Las Galerias, which besides skating will feature bands, DJ’s, contests, giveaways and more. It’s an all day event, starting at 10:30 am and going through until 7:30 at night. The entrance is just C$30 cordobas. So come down and check out Chico and the guys.
