Once upon a time, on a humid and rainy Managua evening, house music DJ and producer, Evan Rhodes, settled down in his studio with a bottle of Ron Plata to put on his headphones and listen to some music. As he enjoyed various house songs on his iTunes, and with the warm feeling of Ron Plata in his belly, he was overcome by sleepiness. As he laid his little head down to fall asleep, he accidentally hit the shuffle mode on his music player. Just as Evan was entering dreamland his iTunes randomly selected La Cuneta Son Machín’s ‘El Zafarrancho.’ An already dreaming Evan was whisked off to a magical land of lakes filled with Ron Plata and volcanoes of gallo pinto erupting with cream, a place of mystical marimbas and psychedelic colored Rolters. Out of nowhere, Frijol appeared on a giant hovering rosquilla and took Evan by the hand. “Where are we going?” Evan asked.” Frijol grinned, held his güira up to the sky and let out an “Ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhh-ohhh-ohh-ohhhh!!!!” as the rosquilla launched off up into the heavens. “Ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhh-ohhh-ohh-ohhhh!!!!” Evan was wide eyed as the clouds flew past. Just then he lost his balance and started to fall, but there was a piece of gum stuck to his shoe that kept him on the rosquilla. He regained his balance and looked over at Frijol who just winked. Suddenly Evan woke up with a start! He was back in his studio with his head on the desk, drool in the corner of his mouth and his earphones sitting crookedly on his head. House music was playing. He sat up and looked at the screen of his Macbook and noticed a strange file entitled “El Zafarrancho (Evan Rhodes Reposado Remix).” He moved the tiny arrow over the file and clicked play. Suddenly the room started shaking, everything began spinning out of control and he was flying through the clouds on a giant rosquilla, this time accompanied by the whole La Cuneta Son Machín! And they all began to sing, “Ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhh-ohhh-ohh-ohhhh!!!! Ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhhh-ohhh-ohhh-ohh-ohhhh!!!!”

This Saturday night Agüizotes terrorizes Managua a day after the original festival takes place in its birthplace of Masaya. Doors open at 9pm with the Alianza Francesa transformed into a house of horrors. The night features live performances from Milly Majuc, La Cuneta Son Machín and DJ’s Evan Rhodes and Chiricano running a “trencito” of terror on the 1’s and 2’s.

The fiesta will celebrate three stages of the original festival from Masaya: the vela del candil, the procession of the Agüizotes and the fiesta of Toro Venado. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed as traditional Agüizotes legends like El Cadejo, La Chancha Bruja, La Llorona, La Muerte Quirina and others.

Entrance for the night is C$200 and includes a free bar of chichi bruja, the traditional corn liquor from Masaya which promises to get you so crazy you may actually see dead people. Don’t make the mistake of missing this party and if you can, make sure to check out the original festival in Masaya on Friday night!

Bang Data – Que Se Mueva f/ DJ El Kool Kyle

Like too many cats and dogs in Nicaragua, Office Kitty’s life started off hard. When Flor rescued the little orange furball and brought him to the office, he was undersized, undernourished, unwanted and covered in dirt and fleas. We cleaned him up and tried to come up with a name, KittyZompopo and Handsome Tiger were some early options, but finally we settled on Office Kitty. I’m not sure what kind of things Kitty went through before he found us, but as he grew older he was always kind of a mean little bastard, but that was just Kitty. He played rough, because his life was rough. But we always loved him because he was our mean little bastard.

Kitty had always been mischievous, but when the Hecho office moved to its current location in Los Robles, he started getting in to more trouble than usual. The neighborhood cats didn’t take kindly to the new kid on the block. One day we found him covered in blood with scratches so deep on his head someone’s first reaction was “Oh my God, you can practically see his brain!” We got him all patched up and he was healing fine, but a few days later he showed up again with fresh wounds joining the old ones that had been ripped back open. We tried to keep him inside, but Kitty had always been stubborn, too independent for his own good.

As time went by, the fights died down, but we started to notice that he was losing a lot of weight. He would only eat his food if someone was watching him (or if it was chicken from On The Run…) and he barely drank any water. After the vet again, Kitty came home and just sat on a shelf in the bathroom and wouldn’t move, wouldn’t eat, wouldn’t do anything. He was taken to the vet one last time and kept overnight, but in the morning he passed away. Poor guy. Even though he was an asshole a lot of the time, peed on all of our beds (multiple times in some cases) and scratched everyone who petted him, Office Kitty will be missed. He was one of those family members who was far from perfect, but at the end of the day, despite all his fucked up idiosyncrasies, he was family and he was loved. Rest in peace, Kitty.
