Subculture Studios is the name of the art department owned and run by Drew Estate, a tobacco company based in Estelí, Nicaragua. Founded in 1995 by New Yorker, Jonathan Drew, The Drew Estate tagline is “The Rebirth of Cigars,” and that applies to the product as well as the presentation.
Subculture is unique in that they are the only art department made up of graffiti artists in the tobacco Industry. They are responsible for the branding, packaging and art for all Drew Estate products, including their more traditional cigars as well as the hugely popular Acid line of infused cigars.
The “Gran Fabrica,” where all the Drew Estate cigars are made is covered in art and murals from Subculture, overseen by the head artist, Jessie Flores.
In addition to their work for Drew Estate, the artists from Subculture have also been contributing to Estelí’s long tradition of murals by doing graffiti pieces all over the city, often times collaborating with other crews from Nicaragua and even Estelí’s traditional muralists.
