I imagine not many magazines have a sleeping DJ across the hall, but I guess Hecho is among the lucky few. When Evan Rhodes actually wakes up, usually sometime in the afternoon, you can also catch him producing new music and original mixes in the makeshift studio that was formerly the Hecho storage room. Coming from a 13 year DJ career that started in Detroit then moved west to San Francisco, Evan is now calling Managua home.

When asking Evan what influences living in Nicaragua have had on him musically, he is quick to reply, “For sure the marimba has had a huge impact on me, as well as latin percussion. When I’m producing music now I’m constantly thinking of the these sounds and how to incorporate it into my music.” Evan is currently working on a new band project entitled El Proyecto Sonido with local musicians Guillermo Noroy (Momotombo), Rodrigo Castro (Q69K) and newcomer Flor Marenco.

Evan plays House music when DJing, a genre that he describes as “electronic music with soul.” He feels here in Nicaragua there are still many different types of electronic music that haven’t fully been discovered and recommends beatport.com as a great online resource for purchasing house music, checking out other types of electronic music, and of course, for picking up some of his releases.

So far Evan is enjoying his stay in Managua, “I really like playing here, the people are great, the food is great…I just don’t really like my roommates…”

Beatriz Fernandez Ferreira, the restaurant’s Italian-Argentinean owner, relishes in Mesón Sur’s reticent dignity, even saying that if her restaurant was full they wouldn’t be able to make their pizza as good as it is now. Everything is made from fresh natural ingredients. “Nature is our luxury,” Fernandez Ferreira says. And I would describe the pizza that comes out of the wood-fired oven the same way, simply luxurious.
The ambiance of the restaurant is decidedly tranquil. Soft jazz, Brazilian music, and an abundance of green plants, make the outdoor seating a great spot to relax and unwind with a glass of wine or a cold beer. Indoors, the walls are decorated with some of Fernandez Ferreira’s own paintings (her home and studio is located above the restaurant).

Mesón Sur is a great place to escape the city without actually leaving it. It’s a place for those times you feel like going out but don’t want to be crammed in a bar with loud 80’s music and tv’s; a place where you can have a slice of serenity with your slice of pizza.

A partir del 27 de Abril se estará impartiendo un curso de Fotografía sobre el proceso Fotográfico:
Revelado de Peliculas Blanco y Negro, ampliaciones etc.
El costo de este curso es de 125 dólares mas materiales, dura 3 meses y se impartirá en el Instituto de Estudios Fotograficos de Nicaragua.

El Comite Ballena Azul les invita a participar este viernes 12 de marzo a partir de las 3pm en el Bar La Rayuela, de la UCA, en la recolección de firmas para pedir al Gobierno de Nicaragua, que envié una Representación a la próxima Reunión de la Comisión Ballenera Internacional (CBI) a realizarse en Marruecos en junio próximo…

De igual forma, solicitarle al gobierno que vote a favor de las ballenas y promueva una acción conservacionista…

TACON 2010 inicia el sábado 24 de abril, pero desde el 29 de marzo al 6 de abril estaremos recepcionando las carpetas con las muestras de las obras.

Esperamos que los jóvenes que deseen incursionar en el arte contemporáneo participen y sean parte de este espacio de formación artística.
